Prep Boys Soccer: Willmar rallies to defeat New Ulm

NEW ULM -- Willmar scored four goals in a span of 12 minutes early in the second half to post a 5-3 come-from-behind win over Section 2A rival New Ulm Saturday.

New Ulm scored in the 12th minute and again in the 31st minute en route to taking a 2-0 lead into halftime. The Cardinals couldn't find a rhythm offensively as they were whistled offsides 12 times, according to Willmar coach Jeff Winter.

But the Cardinals made some adjustments and rattled off four goals before New Ulm would find the back of the net again.

Handerson Tevalan tied the match by scoring in the 42nd minute on an assist from Juan Gomez and in the 50th minute on an assist from Cedar Jimenez. Willmar then pulled ahead three minutes later as Jimenez booted the ball past New Ulm goalkeeper Adam Dunphy after getting a feed from Tim Rogers.

Jose Hernandez converted a penalty kick just seconds later to give Willmar a two-goal cushion. New Ulm got within one in the 58th minute, but Eloy Zavala iced the win by netting his first-ever varsity goal after directing a pass from Graham Dahl past Dunphy in the 61st minute.

Willmar plays its final home match of the regular season on Tuesday when it hosts Sauk Rapids.
