Prep Boys Soccer: Apollo turns back Cardinals' bid for share of CLC title

ST. CLOUD -- The Willmar boys soccer team lost its regular-seaon final, 6-5, at St. Cloud Apollo on Thursday.

The high-scoring game featured seven first-half goals, and four goals in the game were scored on penalty kicks.

Willmar lost its chance to share the Central Lakes Conference title.

Sartell is 9-0-3 following Thursday 3-0 win over Alexandria and clinched the title. Apollo improved to 8-1-2 in the CLC and is a half-point behind Willmar in third. But the Eagles play Alexandria, which is 2-5-3, in their final game and a win would Apollo into second place ahead of the Cardinals.

Thursday's game was a rugged affair, much like the game the Eagles and Cardinals played in Willmar last month.

Four of the teams' seven first-half goals were scored on penalty kicks and Willmar took a 4-3 lead at the half.

Apollo scored twice in the first 17 minutes of the second half, and Willmar tied the game on Cesar Jimenez' diving header of a feed from David Dominguez.

But Apollo's Hamse Abdule scored his second goal of the game in the next minute for the game-winner.

"Our guys fought back and played so hard," said Cardinals coach Jeff Winter. "Unfortunately, like it was here, the game kind of got out of hand."

The Cardinals open Section 2A play at home against Hutchinson at 4 p.m. Monday.
