Willmar girls soccer team's season ends with loss to Austin

AUSTIN -- The Austin girls soccer team scored a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes and went on to scrub Willmar 4-1 and eliminate the Cardinals from the post-season in a Section 2A first-round game on Tuesday.

Austin outshot the Cardinals, fresh off the bus after a four-hour haul, 14 to 6.

"It was a physical game right from the start and we (sustained) quite a few injuries," said Willmar coach Chelsea Brown. "Three of our starters were out, but the girls played hard. It's just too bad it was so physical. (Austin) got a couple of cards."

Willmar's lone goal came on a penalty kick that made it 3-1 in the 57th minute.

"Elise (Duininck) made a beautiful shot over the defenders and the goalie's head," said Brown.

No. 9 Willmar finishes 4-10-2; No. 8 Austin advances to the quarterfinals on Thursday with a 6-11 record.
