Prep Volleyball: BBE falls short in returning to state tournament

PIERZ -- Unfortunately for Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, the pattern continued in the Section 5A championship match.

For the fourth straight year Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa and Nevis faced off in the section final and this time around it was Nevis that collected the title as the Tigers outlasted Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 25-19, 17-25, 21-25, 25-8, 15-12 Saturday night at Pierz High School.

The Jaguars won the section title last year, Nevis the season before and BBE in 2008.

Nevis (24-9) will face Mayer Lutheran (21-13) in the state quarterfinals on Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

BBE (25-8) couldn't find a rhythm Saturday as no Jaguar reached double figures in kills with Mariah Rach, Brittany Winter and Megan Weller combining for just 36 assists in the five-game marathon.

Taylor Braegelman paced BBE with nine kills and Kim Kollman was next in line with seven. Miriah Dekok and Becca Gruber each added five more.

Gruber added four ace blocks and Brittany Roelike served up a team-high three ace serves.

The Jaguars, who were unbeaten in the Central Minnesota Conference this season at 7-0, had won their last six matches headed into Saturday's section championship. A win would have given the Jaguars a fifth trip to state since Belgrade, Brooten and Elrosa paired.
