WILLMAR -- Albany jumped out 9-0 on the host team on Tuesday before Willmar fired up its defensive engines and went on scorch the Huskies 68-40 in the opening round of the Bremer Bank Holiday Classic.

Thirteen Cardinals scored at least two points led by Austin Rambow with 12, Mo Mohamud with 11 and Jimmy Unger, Matt Suedbeck and Alex Grove with 8 apiece.

The Cardinals reached the final of their own tournament, but won't be playing New London-Spicer in the championship for the first time since 2002. That year Willmar lost to North St. Paul.

Benson ended the Wildcats' streak last night and will meet Willmar for the first time since a 66-57 setback in the Bremer semifinal in 2009.

Willmar is 3-1 and Benson 6-1 going into today's game, which should be underway around 7:45 p.m.

Albany forward and top scorer Scott Litchy sank 3 baskets at the start and Dylan Shay another as the Huskies bit off a 9-0 lead.

Rambow got Willmar's first score at 13:20 and Matt Suedbeck, off the bench, followed with the first of his two 3-pointers. Mohamud fired in another trey and then it was Jeremy Olson busting inside to top off a 14-2 home-team run.

Albany had problems against the Willmar pressure, whether full or half court. The Huskies trailed 33-23 by half and were able to score only two field goals against the Cardinal regulars before coach Steve Grove sent in the reserves with plenty of time left.

Litchy finished with 12 points, Cody Stich 10 and Shay 8 for Albany (2-4), which meets NLS for third place at 6 p.m. today.
