WILLMAR -- The Willmar Cardinals saw their chances for at least a piece of the Central Lakes Conference wrestling prize severely diminished when a second-half rally fell short and they lost to visiting St. Cloud Apollo 35-34.

The Eagles remained undefeated at 5-0; Willmar dropped to 4-2.

The Cardinals usually score big down low and have a nice lead after the 152 match. But the Eagles led 23-7 after the 145-pound bout and 29-13 after 160.

August Hahn got 6 points with a first-period pin and Chad Milhausen and Martin Cabrera followed with victories to close to 29-22. But Bryce Synthavong ironed out C.J. Barkely at 220 to clinch the victory.

Willmar heavyweight Cass Herzog received a 6-point forfeit but it left the Cards a point short.

At 138 pounds Alex Johannes ran into one of the state's top wrestler and lost to Apollo junior Mitch Bengston 15-0. The Eagles Class AAA state champion (at 119 pounds) was 41-0 last year and is 203-5 career.

Willmar freshman Travis Deegan, battling a bloody nose, won an extended bout with Steven Tran, who needed time outs for leg cramps, 7-0 at 132 pounds.
