Boys Basketball: Alex clips Willmar

Tribune Staff Report

ALEXANDRIA -- A slow start was too much for Willmar to overcome down the stretch as the Central Lakes Conference-leading Cardinals fell 77-76 to Alexandria Tuesday.

Alexandria made 14-of-19 shots from the field in the first half to take what seemed to be a comfortable 45-28 lead. But Willmar's defensive intensity limited Alexandria to just 5 field goals in the second half.

However, Willmar just ran out of time. Willmar got within three late before Mo Mohamud made uncontested two-pointer as the final horn sounded. The Alexandria players were near their bench to avoid a possible 4-point play that would have sent the game into overtime.

"They had extremely hot shooting in the first half," said Willmar coach Steve Grove. "They put pressure on us and we couldn't make the shots in the first half. It's always a tough position to be in when you're down a large amount. The kids made a valiant effort in the second half, but you can't get down by a large amount."

Willmar, paced by Mohamud's game-high 20 points, now has 4 losses in the CLC, the same amount as Rocori. But Willmar has a slight lead with its 10 wins to Rocori's 9. St. Cloud Tech is 8-5 after falling 49-47 to Sauk Rapids on Tuesday.

Willmar has two conference games remaining, Friday at home against Tech and next Friday at St. Cloud Apollo, but first it plays former CLC member Little Falls Thursday on the road.

Following Mohamud Tuesday was Jimmy Unger with 15 points, Jeremy Olson 14 and Dean Stier 11. Stier also dished out 7 assists while Olson hooked 7 rebounds and Mohamud pocketed 4 steals.
