3A Boys Basketball: Dawson-Boyd turns tables
Tribune staff report
MARSHALL -- Dawson-Boyd couldn't get past MACCRAY last season, suffering three of its six losses to the Wolverines, who went on to finish third in the Class A state tournament.
The Blackjacks bid the jinx goodbye on Saturday night, downing MACCRAY 78-62 in the Section 3A North Sub-Section final at Southwest Minnesota State.
Dawson-Boyd (26-2) won the season rubber match of its three games with MACCRAY, which finished 22-7. The Blackjacks play the South Sub-Section top seed, Southwest Minnesota Christian (25-1), for the Section 3A championship on Thursday at SMSU.
Dawson-Boyd and MACCRAY split two games this season, each winning at home. But since their 65-64 loss Jan. 13 at MACCRAY, the Blacksjacks have won 18 straight, including an 80-75 overtime victory over the Wolverines in Dawson on Feb. 3.
On Saturday, the Blackjacks never let the Wolverines get started. The led by 14 early in the second half, and when MACCRAY whittled the lead to nine at 50-41 with about 10 minutes to play, the Blackjacks promptly ran off nine straight points to run their margin to 18 points with about 6:30 to play.
MACCRAY got the lead down to 12 in the final minutes but that was as close as the Wolverines could get.
The one bright spot in MACCRAY's evening was forward Riley Aeikens surpassing 1,000 career points late in the game.
The torch passing somewhat mimicked the Blackjacks' football season. In the two seasons before this fall, Dawson-Boyd won 17 games but in both years fell to Minneota in the section finals.
The Blackjacks basketball team last year won 19 games but lost three games to the Wolverines by an average of more than 21 points per game.
Those losses are memories now.
