Prep Softball: New Prague clips Cards

Tribune Staff Reports

NEW PRAGUE -- Willmar pieced together a five-run inning late Friday, but it couldn't quite climb out of an early 5-0 deficit as New Prague edged the Cardinals 6-5 in a non-conference game.

New Prague (4-5) scored five runs in the first inning after sending up nine batters to the plate. The early outburst was capped by a Megan Bissell triple to right-center that drove in three runs.

The early lead held up for New Prague starter and winner Amber Hoffman as the senior limited Willmar (4-2) to just two hits through five innings of play. The Cardinals then plated five runs in the sixth to get within one. Two stolen bases and a sacrifice fly in the fifth led to New Prague's sixth run.

After a groundout led off the Willmar sixth, Kassy Linbo reached on an infield error, but a Lindsey Atchison fielder's choice took Linbo off the base path. Sarah Roehl pushed Atchison to second after bunting for a hit and Heather Horning followed with a double down the left-field line that brought in Atchison and Roehl.

Sam Williams was then inserted into the game as a courtesy runner for Horning, who was the starting pitcher, and she advanced to third after Laura Swartz bunted for another Willmar hit. Both Williams and Swartz then scored when New Prague dropped a deep fly ball to center field hit by Addy Nelsen, who later scored on two passed balls. A groundout ended the inning with Willmar trailing 6-5.

The Cardinals then went down 1-2-3 in the seventh to suffer their second straight loss after opening the season with four straight wins.

Horning also singled and struck out six and gave up seven hits and one walk in a complete-game loss.

Willmar hosts Brainerd in a Central Lakes Conference doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. on Tuesday in its home opener.
