Prep Tennis: Willmar evens record

Tribune Staff Report

MANKATO -- Behind a sweep in doubles, Willmar evened its overall record Friday after upending Mankato West 5-2 in a duel between Section 2AA foes.

"This is a pretty big section win," said Willmar coach Jim Anderson. "Jackson Burton had a tough three-setter that he pulled out, and (Shane) Christensen and (Sam) Murphy toughed out a big three-setter. It was a nice team win for the Willmar Cardinals."

Christensen and Murphy won their third set at 1-doubles 6-4 after splitting a pair of 6-3 sets. Burton rebounded after losing the opening set at 2-singles.

Straight-set wins from Cardinals came from Issac Yoakum at 4-singles, Mitch Johannes/Austen Hilding at 2-doubles and Tate Hovland/Drew Corneil at 3-doubles.

Willmar (4-4) hosts Central Lakes Conference rival St. Cloud Tech on Monday at 3:30 p.m. The early start is to accommodate Willmar's senior athletic banquet that starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Conference Center.
