Prep softball roundup: Albany shuts down Paynesville

PAYNESVILLE -- Albany's Karli Persson tossed a two-hit shutout and drove in a run to beat Paynesville 4-0 on Monday in a West Central North Conference game.

Persson struck out 10 and allowed just one walk and two hits, both to the Bulldogs' Sam Dahl.

Paynesville's Megan Schaefer took the loss, allowing four runs on 10 hits while striking out three.

Sauk Centre erased a one-run deficit and took command of the game with an eight-run fourth inning, and the Mainstreeters won the West Central North Conference game in six innings on Monday.

The Wildcats' undoing came in the form of nine errors.

Lisa Dobbelaere drove in Marissa Friedrich for NLS' lone run in the second inning.

Benson/Hancock 6, ACGC 5

Kendra Schmidgall and Alyssa Hughes hit RBI-doubles in the fifth inning to power Benson/Hancock over Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 6-5 on Monday.

The Falcons' Sydney Larson homered to lead off the game and ACGC jumped to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning.

The BraveOwls, who split a doubleheader with BOLD last Friday in Benson, came back with one run in the fourth and four in the fifth to take the lead.

They tacked on an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI-single by Jen Roberts. It turned out to be the winning run when ACGC scored in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-5.

Schmidgall was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Roberts had two hits and one RBI.

Larson and Natasha Dallmann each had two hits for ACGC.

Minnewaska 3, YME 1

GRANITE FALLS -- Minnewaska scored all of its runs Monday with two outs en route to stretching its winning streak to 11 as the Lakers edged Yellow Medicine East 3-1 in a non-conference game.

The Lakers (16-2) scored in the first, third and fifth. Julie Helander singled to lead off the game and stole second before scoring on Julie Helander's single.

Kaylee Jacobs put the Lakers up 2-0 in the third when she doubled in Lexi Amundson, who reached on an error. YME (8-8) got two quick outs in the Lakers' fifth, but Jacobs, Helander and Alyssa Engfer hit back-to-back-to-back singles to get a run back.

YME scored in the third when Dani Roden singled and came around after Minnewaska tried to throw her out at third when Nena McCalla singled.

Mady Phillips worked all seven innings and struck out eight without issuing a walk to get the win. Allie Trudel was the hard-luck loser after striking out five and giving up just two earned runs in a complete-game performance.

YME had runners on second and third with one out in the seventh, but Phillips notched a strikeout and induced a groundball to first to end the game.

McKenzie VanBatavia also was on the beam permitting one hit and a run in four innings. She took the loss.

The Tigers can wrap up the West Central South crown today when they host Yellow Medicine East.

Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa led briefly but Eden Valley-Watkins got its bats going in the third inning and doubled-up the Jaguars, 14-7, in a Central Minnesota Conference game Monday.

BBE's Michelle Sanders took the loss but had a solid day at the plate, with three hits, three runs batted in and three runs scored. Becca Gruber had two hits and drove in a pair of runs.

The Jaguars' rallied for 6 runs in the bottom of the seventh to claim a sweep at Tyler. Chelsea Ahl's 2-run double tied the score 9-9 and then a pinch runner scored the game-ending run with 2 out on a wild pitch.

Cassidy Fransen, the winner in Game 1, threw 3-innings of hitless relief for her second victory of the day.
