Prep baseball: BOLD beats NUC twice for Class A tourney berth

MANKATO -- The BOLD baseball team was a little tight in the early innings of its Section 2A battle against New Ulm Cathedral on Tuesday.

Their feelings were understandable since the Warriors were behind in a game they needed to win to avoid elimination against the same team that put them in the loser's bracket.

"The first three innings, you could tell they were nervous," said BOLD coach Brian Kingery. "I just told them, 'Forget about everything that's happened. To win, we just have to win the next four innings.' After that, they settled down and you could just see their confidence building."

Indeed. The Warriors rebounded for a 2-1 win over the Greyhounds in first game, then won the section championship and secured a spot in next week's Class A state tournament with a 4-0 victory in the second and deciding game.

Logan Sangren and Jake Marcus pitched complete games and allowed a combined five hits and one unearned run in the two games for the 22-4 Warriors.

Sangren clinched the title with his second shutout win in four days, one-hitting the Greyhounds and striking out 10 in game two.

"After coming back in that first (game), we just had all the momentum," Kingery said. "Then, Riley Kramer had a big RBI single in the first inning (of game two) and Logan was just dealing."

The Warriors play the Section 8A winner at 3 p.m., June 14, in Chaska.

Game Two

BOLD 4, NU Cathedral 0

Kyle Athmann had two hits and drove in two runs, and Sangren one-hit the Greyhounds and struck out 10 in the section title game.

Riley Kramer and Zach Remillard also drove in runs for the Warriors, Trent Athmann was 2-for-3 and Marcus and Tyler Seehusen -- who had the game-winning hit in the first game -- also had a single.

Game One

BOLD 2, NU Cathedral 1

MANKATO -- BOLD forced a deciding second game by scoring the tying run in the sixth and the go-ahead run in the seventh inning against New Ulm Cathedral in the first game of the Section 2A playoff championships Tuesday.

With the game tied 1-1 in the top of the seventh, Sangren singled with one out, moved to second when Kramer walked and took third on a ground out. Tyler Seehusen followed with a solid single to score Sangren with the eventual winning run.

BOLD preserved the win in the bottom of the seventh when winning pitcher Jake Marcus fielded a hard ground ball back to the mound and cut down a Greyhound runner at third base for the second out. A fly ball caught by Kyle Athmann in centerfield ended the game.

Marcus and NUC's Jordan Guggisberg pitched well, and Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning. But BOLD tied the game in the top of the sixth when Zach Remillard blooped a single to drive in Trent Athmann.

Marcus worked all seven innings, allowing four hits and striking out four.
