Girls golf: Minnewaska finishes 2nd at state

The Minnewaska girls shaved 16 strokes off its Day 1 total Wednesday during the final round of the Class AA state meet, but it wasn't nearly enough to catch Detroit Lakes.

Led by eighth-grader Kate Smith, Detroit Lakes captured the team title at The Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan by 35 shots over the runner-up and five-time champion Lakers.

St. Croix Lutheran was third at 691, 37 shots behind Minnewaska and 72 behind Detroit Lakes' 619.

Brianna Janu placed third individually for Minnewaska by carding a two-day total of 153. The senior opened with a 75 -- helped by a red-hot 33 on the back nine -- on Tuesday before struggling on her final nine Wednesday to post a 78. Smith shot 70 both days to win by nine shots over Becker's Kourtney Williams, who also finished second last year; Janu tied for ninth last year.

Also finishing in the top 10 this year for Minnewaska was junior Alexis Guggisberg and freshman Jenna Janu. Both underclassmen shot an 83 Tuesday and 79s on Wednesday to tie Matty Tschider of Detroit Lakes for 10th.

Sophomore Ellen Stensrud posted the fourth-best score for Minnewaska during the tourney with a 95-83--178 (tied for 38th). Eighth-grader Ashlyn Guggisberg tied for 46th (94-89--183) and freshman Ariel Ostrander was 87th (131-118--247).

Also finishing from the area was Litchfield's trio of freshman Kennedy Sommerfeld (tie for 29th) and sophomores Alex Tipka (tie for 41st) and Danielle Elam (tie for 48th), BOLD senior Chloe Altmann (tie for 31st) and Lac qui Parle Valley senior (tied for 52nd).

After ending the first day in a four-way tie for first at the Class A meet at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker, Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart junior Carly Schmalz finished 13th.

Schmalz carded a 93 yesterday after opening with an 82.

Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa freshman Peyton Miller was right behind in a tie for 14th with a two-day total of 176. Teammate Jordan Grundemann, a junior, finished 59th.

MACCRAY juniors Baillee Hauser (tied for 18th) and Karissa Kienholz (tied for 34th) shot lower rounds Wednesday to end of the season on a high note.
