Legion Baseball: Three no-hitters highlight second round of playoffs

MONTEVIDEO -- Colton Vien gave up one walk Thursday, but that was the only thing the right-hander gave up as Vien no-hit Sacred Heart/MACCRAY to help Montevideo collect a 10-0, five-inning win in the second round of the District 7, Division II Region 4 playoffs.

Three sparkling defensive plays early in the game kept Vien's shot at a no-hitter going with Montevideo third baseman Austin Hoehne coming up with two of them. Vien's bid for a perfect game was spoiled in the third when he issued a full-count walk to Chris Feldman to open the frame.

The Monte offense was also working on all cylinders as it cranked out 13 hits off two Sacred Heart/MACCRAY pitchers. Brett Bergeson was 3-for-4 to drive in four runs and Vien also singled three times to help his own cause.

In the top half of the first inning, Mitch Treml hit a shot in the hole between Hoehne and Bergeson at short. Hoehne dove to his left to stab the hard-hit ball out of the air. Later in the third, Hoehne fielded a Collin Thompson bunt barehanded and fired the ball across the diamond to Jordan Thompson at first to throw the runner out.

Vien knocked down a ball hit up the middle by Tucker Harazin in the second. Bergeson had enough time to react and threw a dart to first to get Harazin out by a half-step.

Bergeson had run-scoring hits in his first three plate appearances and Jake Bednar knocked out SH/MACCRAY starter Tyler Donner with a two-run single in the fourth.

Montevideo, the top seed for the region tournament, meets No. 3 Madison on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Montevideo. No. 4 SH/MACCRAY and No. 2 Granite Falls follow at noon with the morning loser and the noon winner meeting at 2 p.m. in an elimination game. The championship is set for Sunday at noon in Montevideo. A second game would follow if needed.

Region 3

BOLD 2, Tri-Town 0

Jake Marcus mowed down Tri-Town en route to tossing a seven-inning no-hitter that featured 14 strikeouts.

The pitching feat allowed the top-seeded Mudhens to move into Saturday's winner's bracket final. Bird Island is hosting the region's final four starting Saturday with No. 4 Tri-Town and No. 3 Hector squaring off at 10 a.m. and BOLD facing off against No. 2 Fairfax at 12:30 p.m. The morning winner and afternoon loser will then play at roughly 3 p.m. in an elimination game.

Sunday's final is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. with another game to follow if needed.

Marcus got all the support he would need in the sixth. Kyle Athmann led off the frame with a walk and stole second. Tri-Town then got two outs before Jordan P. Nelson intentionally walked Logan Sandgren. Tyler Seehusen followed with a shot hit to right-center to knock in Athmann and Sandgren with a triple. Sandgren also tripled in the game.

Athmann singled twice to account for half of the Mudhens' four hits.

Tri-Town threatened in the top half of the sixth after Marcus issued a walk and a BOLD error put two runners on with two outs. But Marcus ended the threat by inducing a fly ball to center.
