Girls soccer: Willmar tops Hutch
WILLMAR -- The Willmar Cardinals girls soccer team wilted in the 85-degree heat for a time but revived at halftime and went on to cool off the Hutchinson Tigers 5-3 on Tuesday at the Kennedy pitch.
Willmar sprang to an early 2-0 lead on markers by Jennyfer Jimenez and Shelby Schneider. But the Tigers persisted and tied 2-2 by halftime, each time on quick counter attacks that beat the Willmar defense.
"We just got a little tire in the heat," said Willmar head coach Chelsea Brown. "We were getting beat to the ball. We had a talk at halftime and the girls turned it around in the second half."
Elise Duininck, Stephanie Thompson and Schneider, again, each found the net for a 5-2 lead after 60 minutes.
Jordan Martins supplied two assists and Lexi Dahlberg got the win in goal.
It was Willmar's second win against section opponents. The Cardinals head for Alexandria for a 7 p.m. game Thursday to open the Central Lakes Conference campaign before a home game (11 a.m.) on Saturday against Worthington, also a 2A rival.
