WILLMAR -- One goal was all the New Ulm Eagles needed to trip up Willmar 1-0 in girls soccer Saturday at Kennedy Field.

Monica Illikman's goal, off a rebound, came at 21:00 of the opening half.

Willmar's defense was excellent in front of keeper Jordan Martins, who made 11 stops.

"Jordan had a phenomenal game," said coach Chelsea Brown, "and our defense played so well against a very good team. [The defenders] were communicating and covering for one another."

The Cardinals, now 3-1 against section foes, created only five chances on the Eagles net and none after sophomore forward Stephanie Thompson had to leave the game with assistance with about 15 minutes left after injuring her right knee on the attack.

Senior goalie Shelby Smith got the shutout. She has allowed just two scores during the Eagles 5-1 start.
