Boys soccer: Becerra goal leads Cards over Hutch

HUTCHINSON -- Willmar attackers bounced balls off the Hutchinson goal posts six times without success but senior co-captain Junior Becerra scored in the second half, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 win over their section foe Saturday.

Coach Jeff Winters credited midfielder Juan Contreras with setting the table.

"The ball was coming out of the Hutchinson zone but Juan one-timed from midfield with a kick that beat the defense and Junior took it on the fly," said Winter. "He dribbled into the box from the left side and split two defenders with a sharp cut to his right and buried the ball bottom right."

The Cardinals controlled the ball, outshooting the Tigers 15-3. Charlie Trochlil got the shutout. Nate Thunstrom was busy with 14 saves on the other end.

Willmar, now 2-1 versus section teams, plays at Central Lakes Conference rival St. Cloud Apollo on Tuesday.
