Boys Soccer: Willmar soars past Bluejays

WILLMAR -- Nick Daugherty scored 45 seconds into Central Minnesota Christian's non-conference match with Willmar Saturday, but Junior Becerra and the Cardinals soared back to collect a 5-1 win.

Becerra netted two goals in a two-minute span early in the first half and scored the first goal in the second half to collect a hat trick. The senior attacker leads the Cardinals in scoring with 8 goals and 3 assists.

It was the second straight win for Willmar (5-4) and third in the last four matches. The Cardinals host St. Cloud Tech for a Central Lakes Conference match Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Isaac Yoakum and Christian Vellecillo also had a goal for Willmar. David Dominquez had two assists.

"We really controlled the game," said Willmar coach Jeff Winter. "We probably had possession of the ball 75 percent of the time. We did a good job passing, but their goalie [Zach Zwart] made some nice saves."

Charlie Trochlil made 8 saves in the Willmar net.
