Boys soccer: Cards fall to Tech

WILLMAR -- Willmar boys soccer coach Jeff Winter got the type of effort he expected from his team but it still wasn't quite enough in a Central Lakes Conference match against St. Cloud Tech on Tuesday.

The Cardinals scored the lone second half goal to knot the match 2-2 and force overtime.

But Tech scored twice in the extra period to win 4-2 at the Kennedy school field.

"It was tough," Winter said. "I've been asking the guys to string together a full 80 minutes. Lately, we've been giving up early goals or scoring early goals, so I had been stressing playing well for 80 minutes. Well, they did that but the game went 90."

Juan Contreras scored for the Cardinals in the 17th minute, and teammate David Dominguez tied the game with an unassisted goal at 79:45.

But Tech's Mohamud Aden and Brandon From scored goals less than two minutes apart in the overtime to lock up the CLC win.

Junior Becerra had a long strike glance off the cross bar and the Cardinals had other strong scoring chances that narrowly missed, Winter said.

"We played a great 90 minutes," Winter said. "That was our best team game of the year, despite losing. We put lots of pressure on them and we had a couple of good chances that just didn't come through."

Willmar is now 2-4 in the conference, 3-1 in section games and 5-5 overall. The Cardinals play at Brainerd at 5 p.m. Thursday.

"I'm looking forward to taking (this kind of) game to Brainerd on Thursday," Winter said.
