Boys soccer: Cards fall to Brainerd

BRAINERD -- Brainerd's Brayden Campbell put in a penalty kick at 56 minutes and the Warriors clipped the Willmar Cardinals 2-1 on Thursday.

The Cardinals fell to 2-5 in the Central Lakes Conference while Brainerd improved to 2-4-1.

"I thought we played them despite losing," Willmar head coach Jeff Winter said. "It was a hard fought battle. We had a goal that was not counted - the ref said it was never in - it could've been 2-1 the other way very easily."

The Warriors' Isaiah Gilderman scored at 27 minutes to give Brainerd a 1-0 lead. After Campbell's goal in the second half, Willmar's Juan Contreras scored from the right side wing from 30 yards out at 78 minutes.

Willmar next plays 7 p.m. Tuesday at Alexandria.
