Girls tennis roundup: Willmar rolls past Marshall

MARSHALL -- The Willmar girls overcame a tough, windy day to beat Marshall 5-2 on Monday in a non-conference match.

The Cardinals' Heather Horning and Kassy Linbo in 1-doubles and Waverly Slette and Leah Ramon in 2-doubles both battled for third-set wins for the deciding points.

The normal 1-singles player for Willmar, Gabie Bierbaum, was under the weather, forcing all players to move up.

1-singles Cayle Hovland and 2-singles Bailey Hovland both lost their matches, but Hannah Hansen in 3-singles and Maddy Oehrlein in 4-singles picked up wins for Willmar.

The Cardinals' Tayva Vollan and Megan Andersen in 3-doubles also won their match.

Willmar faces Fergus Falls 4 p.m. today in Willmar.

MACCRAY swept doubles on its way to defeating Morris/Chokio-Alberta 4-3 on Monday.

Amber Wieberdink rolled past Darcey Aronson in 1-singles for the Wolverines, but the Tigers won the remaining singles matches, including Megan Wagner in a 10-8 tiebreaker in 3-singles.

MACCRAY 1-doubles Erica/Bonnema/Kaylee Christenson and 2-doubles Rachel Davids/Jenna Mersbergen both won in straight sets.

Annie Sandry/Heather Marcus in 3-doubles for the Wolverines went to a tiebreaker where they defeated Elizabeth Schneider/Emily Moser 10-6.

No. 7 seed Yellow Medicine East advanced to the quarterfinal-round of the section playoffs after all six of its points came in straight sets. The Sting will now meet No. 2 Redwood Valley at 4 p.m. on Thursday in Redwood Falls.

Keaunna Hammer and Sandy Bartels paired to blank their opponent in both sets at 3-doubles for YME. Also winning 6-0 in a set during their wins for YME was Danielle Clark at 2-singles and Leah Gluth at 4-singles.

Kyle Jahn toppled Jordan Glad 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) in 1-singles to collect the lone win for No. 10 Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd.
