Girls Soccer: Apollo slips past Cardinals 2-1

ST. CLOUD -- Willmar fell to St. Cloud Apollo 2-1 Thursday but will head into section play on Monday on a positive note.

"That was our best game all season," commented Cardinals coach Chelsea Brown. "Apollo is very fast. We dominated the first half and had a couple of shots; one went just wide. This is the kind of game we needed to play heading into postseason."

The game was scoreless through the first hour. The Eagles scored the first of their two goals -- both on corner kicks -- in the 61st minute. The second goal came five minutes later for a 2-0 lead.

Willmar forward Stephanie Thompson made it 2-1 with nine minutes left scoring on a throw-in by Lauren Sing.

The Cardinals (0-10-1, 3-12-1) were outshot 10-2 on goal. Jordan Martins made 8 saves.

Willmar opens postseason play Monday; 2A seeding is expected out today.

Note: St. Cloud Apollo, 6-4-2 CLC and 7-5-3 overall, does not provide a roster online. Only numbers were available from the Willmar statistician.
