Girls tennis: Dobbelaere 3rd in 5A

COLLEGEVILLE -- New London-Spicer tennis player Lisa Dobbelaere placed third in the Section 5A individual tournament on Monday at St. John's University.

Dobbelaere, an NLS junior, lost to Providence Academy's Eva Sullivan 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals.

Dobbelaere then defeated St. Cloud Cathedral's Lexie Nepsund 6-0, 6-1 in the section third-place match.

Dobbelaere's third-place victory qualified her for a true-second match but she fell to Annandale's Kaytlin Kuefler 6-0, 6-4.

Section 6A

Section 6A singles top seed Ellen Stensrud of Minnewaska and the Lakers' top-seeded doubles team of Rachel Riley and MaKenna Hanson all moved into the semifinals with victories on Monday at the Fitness Evolution club.

Stensrud, a Lakers junior, defeated Sauk Centre's Hope Schwinghamer 6-0, 6-0, before defeating Krista Paulson of West Central Area 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Stensrud will play Osakis' Lauren Silbernick in the semifinals.

Silbernick, the No. 5 seed, advanced with a 6-4, 6-2 win over No. 4-seed Kelly Saunders of Benson on Monday. Saunders defeated Long Prairie-Grey Eagles' Payton Long 6-0, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals.

Riley and Hanson defeated Megan Vergin and Melanie Reese of Benson/KMS in the opening round 6-1, 6-0, then downed LPGE's Lexi Larson and Abbey Schultz 7-5, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Riley and Hanson will play the No. 4-seed team of Madison Rausch and Michaela Worms of Melrose in the semifinals.

In the other section singles semifinals match, Grace Brang of Melrose, the No. 2 seed, will face Taylor Kraemer, the No. 2 seed from Osakis. Kraemer advanced with a 6-0, 6-1 first-round win over Minnewaska's Joelle Thorfinnson. Kraemer then defeated Jailyn Brinkman of Melrose 6-0, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Brinkman won her first-round match 6-0, 6-2 over Benson/KMS' Bridget Auch.
