Prep volleyball: Cardinals split at Pumpkin Classic

MOORHEAD -- The Willmar volleyball team split four matches in the Pumpkin Invitational tournament in Moorhead on Friday and Saturday in what head coach Traci Grussing said will hopefully tune up the Cardinals for this week's playoff opener.

The Cardinals defeated Lake of the Woods and Win-E-Mac while falling to Nevis and Dillworth-Glyndon-Felton.

"The teams we played are top teams in Class AA or Class A so we had to play hard all the time," Grussing said. "Hopefully that will help us in the playoffs because our section is so tough."

The Cardinals open the Section 2AAA playoffs as the No. 10 seed playing at No. 7 seed New Prague at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Grussing noted that despite a 20-6 record, Buffalo enters the section tournament as the No. 8 seed.

"There are a lot of good teams," she said.

At the Pumpkin Invitational, Emily Minnick was good on 83 percent of her hitting attempts and totaled 52 kills. She also had 8 ace blocks.

Anne Dunham had 23 kills, 8 service aces, 4 block aces and 40 digs. McKenzie Hasted had 14 kills and 33 digs, and Riley Grussing had 108 set assists, 5 ace blocks and 4 kills.
