Girls hockey: River Lakes edges Cardinals
PAYNESVILLE — Willmar goalie Madison Sandberg kept the Cardinals in the game with stellar work in net but River Lakes’ relentless offensive attack proved too strong in a 4-3 victory on Thursday at the Koronis Ice Arena.
Sandberg faced 47 shots and turned away 43 while the Cardinals had trouble mounting much of an attack, mustering just 13 shots on goal.
“River Lakes is solid and they have deep lines,” said Cardinals head coach JaColby Anderson. “They played three lines where we played two and I think that worked to their advantage. You could tell we were running out of gas at the end of periods.”
The Cardinals led 1-0 after one period on an Annie Johnston goal, and the game was still tied, 2-2, after two.
But Erin Porwoll scored two third period goals, including the game-winner at 12:12 after Willmar’s Miranda Roelofs tied the game 3-3 with her second goal of the game at 9:57.
