SPICER — Carter Sack slugged a three-run homer and Tyler Stegeman was a menace on the base paths, aiding Willmar’s 8-7 win over New London-Spicer Thursday at Green Lake Diamonds in a Legion baseball game.

Stegeman singled to open the game and later stole second and third. A couple of walks soon followed to load the bases, and with No. 6 hitter Trae Murphy at the plate, Stegeman stole home to give Post 167 a quick 1-0 lead.

NLS responded by plating two runs in the bottom half of the first, highlighted by Mike Arnold’s RBI single. That would be the only time NLS owned a lead as Willmar produced seven runs in the second.

Post 167 had 11 batters in the frame, capped by Josh Tinklenberg’s RBI single. Preceding that was Sack’s three-run homer, a two-run double off Stegeman’s bat, and a balk and passed ball that allowed another run to come in.

Willmar starter Brandon Wedel worked the first five innings to get the win, scattering six hits, five strikeouts, three earned runs and three walks. The righthander nearly didn’t factor in the decision, though. NLS scored four times in the seventh before Stegeman got the game’s final out on a strikeout after he walked two and gave up a hit.

Highlighting the NLS seventh was Arnold’s two-run double and a Jaden Hanson RBI single. NLS had runners on second and third when the game ended.

Hanson also doubled in a run in the third and finished 3-for-4 at the plate.

Stegeman and Brett Swanson were the only two Willmar players to get two hits as NLS outhit the visiting 10-7.

Arnold, who was tagged with the loss after throwing five innings, and Wyatt White had two hits apiece for NLS, which hosts Annandale today at 7 p.m.

Willmar is at the Avon Wood Bat Tournament on Saturday.
