Boys Hockey: Schneider’s goal, Benson’s goaltending lead Cards over MW

LITTLE FALLS — Hunter Schneider scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and goalie Joey Benson made 12 third-period saves to ward off Mound-Westonka 3-2 Friday in the Little Falls Invitational.

The Cardinals, now 5-4-1, play Little Falls at 7 p.m. today, then play Hutchinson at 2 p.m. Saturday.

On the game-winner, Schneider carried up the wing before making a quick move to the middle of the zone and rifling a quick shot, said Cardinals head coach Dan Tollefson.

“He did what he was supposed to do,” Tollefson said. “It was a nice play by Hunter.”

Benson made a nice save on a Mound-Westonka short-handed breakaway and carried that momentum into the third period, Tollefson said.

“They threw the house at us at the end, pulled their goalie,” Tollefson said. “But when we needed the big saves, Joey Benson came up big for us. He saved that breakaway in the second and just fed off that.”

MW held a 1-0 lead after one on a Broten Togstad goal, but Hunter Mottinger tied the score early in the second on the power play. Sam Roberts put the Cards up one with another second-period goal on an assist from Zech Streed.

MW tied the game on a Ben O’Borsky goal before Schneider struck five minutes later.

“It was a big win for us,” Tollefson said.
