Roundup: YME opens 3A playoffs with straight-set win

GRANITE FALLS - The Yellow Medicine East volleyball team opened the Section 3A tournament with a convincing win over Lac qui Parle Valley on Monday.

YME prevailed 25-15, 25-19 and 25-11.

The Sting's Anna McCosh was strong at the net with three solo blocks. She added three kills before the night was over as well.

Meeghen Dahlager did plenty of heavy lifting as well, finishing with a team-high eight kills.

The victory sets up a meeting with MACCRAY, the No. 2 seed in the North section. MACCRAY won 3-0 in the only previous matchup between these teams.

Renville County West pulled off a little upset in their opening match of the Section 3A tournament on Monday night.

As the No. 9 seed, the Jaguars took down No. 8 Lakeview to set up a second-round match against top-seeded Minneota.

Britney Marr was impressive in the tightly contested match, accounting for 17 kills. Avery Elfering was a key contributor as well. She finished the night with 35 set assists, two aces, four kills and 19 digs.

The Jaguars will take on the Vikings at 6 p.m. on Friday at Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall.

Canby dispatched Dawson-Boyd in the opening round of the Section 3A tournament on Monday night.

The Blackjacks entered the tournament as the No. 12 seed and finished their regular season with a 3-2 win over Hancock. They couldn't replicate that in their lone postseason match, though, as the Lancers cruised in three sets.

The Lancers now move on to the second round where they will take on fourth-seeded Central Minnesota Christian at 7:15 p.m. on Friday at Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall.

Section 6A

Hancock 3, WCA 2

A meeting between No. 9-seed West Central and No. 8 Hancock in the opening round of the Section 6A tournament was as close as advertised, with Hancock winning in five sets on Monday.

The first three sets were all decided by four points or less but Hancock bounced back from a tough fourth set loss to take the victory with a 15-13 fifth set win.

Hancock survived with a strong defensive performance. Emma Nelson and her teammates helped keep plays alive with an overwhelming amount of digs.

Hancock now advances to take on top-seeded Underwood at 6 p.m. on Thursday in Underwood.

BBE and Paynesville tuned up for the postseason with a tough Central Minnesota Conference match on Monday in Paynesville.

Katherine Mastey and Sarah Feely led BBE with 12 kills apiece and Morgan Gronli had 10. Tessa Halvorson and Karsee Kampsen teamed up for 42 set assists and Kendra Schmitz had six ace blocks. Feely also had three service aces and four blocks.

Paynesville's Katelyn Dingmann had a match-high 13 kills and Sydney Riley and Molly Stang combined for 36 set assists.

Abby Olson was dominant as Montevideo ended its regular season with a 3-1 victory over Minnewaska in a West Central Conference match on Monday at Minnewaska High School.

Olson led the team with eight service aces and 19 digs. She also added seven kills.

The Thunder Hawks scored 23 in their only set loss which came in the third game.

Montevideo will now prepare for Paynesville in the Section 3AA tournament opener on Friday in Paynesville.

Boys Soccer

Fan bus for Card quarterfinal

The Willmar Cardinals boys soccer team takes on Northfield in a Class A state quarterfinals game at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Cloud State University.

The school will send a fan bus to the game. Cost is $10 and signup is at the Willmar High School office. All kids eighth-grade and younger must be accompanied by a paying adult. The bus leaves Willmar High School at 5:45 p.m.

Tickets are available at the door at SCSU. Adult tickets are $7 and student tickets are $5.
