Girls Basketball: Schwitters, Asche lead MACCRAY over ACGC
CLARA CITY — Sydney Schwitters scored 21 points and added seven assists, Piper Asche posted a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double and MACCRAY came out on top of a back-and-forth game against ACGC, 68-62.
After a first half that swung like a hypnotist's pendulum, the Wolverines used a strong second half showing and held on down the final stretch.
The Falcons grabbed an early 9-2 lead, but MACCRAY quickly responded with a 12-0 run to hold an 14-9 lead with 13:35 to play in the first half.
Just then, ACGC answered back by scoring the next 13 points to take a 22-14 lead. The Wolverines found Asche time and time again throughout the rest of the half, as an 8-0 MACCRAY run tied the game back up.
As they did in gaining a 29-28 halftime lead, the Wolverines continued to work the paint. Asche's size and the penetration of Schwitters and Ellie Thein, who finished with 15 points, gave MACCRAY a 34-18 advantage in points in the paint.
35 of the Wolverines' 55 field goal attempts came in the paint, while the Falcons went just 9-for-28 in the same area.
Madison Denton had 20 points for ACGC, which kept the game close down the stretch but, shooting 33 percent, could not find the offensive efficiency to pull ahead.
The Falcons are back in action on Thursday at Sauk Centre.
MACCRAY, winners of consecutive games, travel to Central Minnesota Christian on Thursday.
