Prep Wrestling: Willmar, Litchfield, KMS hold top seeds

The prep wrestling post-season got underway in a big way on Tuesday, with the top four seeds in Section 5A advancing to the semifinals in Kerkhoven and Belgrade.

Top-seed KMS and No. 4 Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville will square off on Friday and No. 2 BBE takes on No. 3 Paynesville. Both matches are at 6 p.m. in Holdingford, and the winners will meet at 8 p.m. Friday for a spot in the Minnesota State Wrestling Tournament.

The state tournament is March 2-4 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

The Tribune area's other seven teams still alive will begin their trek to the state tournament on Thursday and Friday, and two teams—Litchfield in 6AA and Willmar in 8AAA—hold No. 1 seeds.

Here's a look at this week's section team matchups and dates and locations for each section's individual tournaments:

Section 3A

BOLD is the No. 7 seed and faces No. 2 Minneota at 7 p.m. Thursday in Minneota. Pipestone is the section's top seed. The section team championship is 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Pipestone, and the individual tournament is Feb. 24-25 in Jackson.

Section 4A

ACGC is the section's No. 2 seed and meets either No. 7 Spectrum of No. 10 Minneapolis North at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Trinity School at River Ridge in Eagan. Sibley East is the No. 1 seed in the section, which wraps up in one day at River Ridge.

The section team title match is Saturday afternoon, 10 minutes after the conclusion of the 3 p.m. semifinals matches. The section's individual tournament is Feb. 25 in Kimball.

Section 5A

KMS, LPGE/Browerville, BBE and Paynesville will settle the section title beginning with semifinals at 6 p.m. Friday in Holdingford. The section individual tournament is Feb. 24-25 at New London-Spicer High School.

Section 3AA

United, comprised of Dawson-Boyd, Lac qui Parle Valley and Montevideo, is the No. 4 seed in the North half of the section bracket, and takes on No. 5 North Redwood Valley at 6 p.m. Thursday in Marshall.

The winner gets section No. 1 seed Marshall at 7:15 p.m. Thursday in Marshall.

No. 3 North seed Quad County, comprised of Yellow Medicine East, Renville County West and MACCRAY, wrestles North No. 2 seed Wabasso/Red Rock Central at 7:15 p.m. Thursday in Marshall.

The section title match is 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Wabasso, and the section individual tournament is Feb. 24-25 at Redwood Valley High School.

Section 6AA

The 21-3 Litchfield Dragons are the No. 1 seed in the section, with 28-8 Foley holding the No. 2 seed on the bottom half of the bracket.

Litchfield gets the winner between No. 8 Albany and No. 9 Monticello at noon on Saturday in Foley. The section championship is 4 p.m. Saturday in Foley, and the individual tournament is Feb. 24-25 at St. Cloud State University.

Section 8AA

The Morris Area/Hancock/Chokio-Alberta wrestling team heads way up north, taking on No. 7 Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus as the section's No. 10 seed. The match is 11 a.m. Saturday in Thief River Falls.

The winner wrestles No. 2 seed Detroit Lakes—Perham is the section's No.1 seed—at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in TRF. The team championship is 6 p.m. Saturday, and the section individual tournament is Feb. 24-25 in Fergus Falls.

Section 8AAA

Willmar holds the top seed and the Cardinals face a 12:30 p.m. second-round matchup on Friday in Sartell against either No. 8 Alexandria or No. 9 Rocori. Little Falls is the No. 2 seed in the bottom half of the bracket.

The section championship match is 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Sartell, and the individual tournament is Feb. 24-25 in Alexandria.
