Girls Basketball: BBE prepped for section final
A late-season push has the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa girls' basketball team rolling on all cylinders and playing in the Section 5A final on Friday night in Little Falls.
Led by the trio of Hailey Braegelman, Macie Kirckof and Morgan Gronli, the Jaguars will look to make their first State Tournament appearance in school history with a win over Cromwell-Wright.
Following a start to the season that saw the team go 8-6, the Jaguars rattled off a nine game winning streak and won 13 of their last 15 games. Now, all that stands in their way is the Cardinals, ranked No. 4 by QRF and No. 7 by Minnesota Basketball News.
The most recent segment in BBE's late-season run was an impressive 49-43 upset of top-seeded Kimball in the sub-section final on Tuesday night. Behind 16 points from Kirckof and an 11-point halftime lead, the Jaguars handed the Cubs just their sixth loss of the season. It avenged an 63-59 loss to Kimball earlier in the season.
BBE has averaged a margin of victory of 16 points over its last 13 wins—thanks in large part to a stout defensive effort that allowed over 50 points in just one of those wins. For the season, the Jaguars allowed 46.6 points against per game.
Braegelman averaged 13.1 points and 5.7 rebounds per game and was followed in support by Gronli (9.6 points, 3.2 reb.) and Kirckof (9.3, 6).
The task won't be easy for the Jaguars, who go up against a 24-4 Cardinals team that won the section last season.
