Local Roundup: Litch tennis team wins Section 6A opener

LITCHFIELD - Litchfield advanced to the second round of the Section 6A tournament with a 7-0 victory over Benson on Thursday.

Josh Prahl, Trevor Meyer, Jordan Green and Matthew Wedin notched singles victories for the Dragons while the doubles teams of Jon Madsen and Zach Kaizer, Cody Lendt and Andrew Fisher and Griffin Kinny and Payton Prahl all won points in doubles matches.

The Dragons surrendered just one game in the four singles matches.

Litchfield plays St. Cloud Cathedral—a 5-2 winner over St. John's Prep—at 10 a.m. Monday at the College of St. Benedict. The section semifinals are at noon Monday and the championship match follows at 2 p.m.

The section individual tournament begins Wednesday at St. Benedict.

Pine City blanked New London-Spicer in the first round of the Section 6A tournament on Thursday in Pine City.

The section individual tournament is Wednesday at the College of St. Benedict.

St. Cloud Tech 4, Willmar 3

Willmar had St. Cloud Tech on the ropes, tied 3-3 with the No. 1 doubles match left to play but the Tigers were able to hang on in one of the tightest matches of the season.

Nick Portz and Scott Kippley took the win in a 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-4) match with Ryan Ackerman/Pablo Bernabeu Guerra.

"I could not be more pride with how well all the guys dug in and gave their best effort," Willmar head coach Jim Anderson said.

The Cardinals showed some growth after previously falling to the Tigers 6-1 on May 2.

Willmar will get the playoffs underway Monday and take on the winner of Big Lake and Sauk Rapids at Becker High School. If the Cardinals win their first playoff match they will likely take on St. Cloud Tech once again.

Willmar's Levi Hauser tied for fifth place with a 76 at Pebble Lake Golf Club on Thursday in Fergus Falls.

Hauser's score was just one better than teammate Ian Carruthers' 77. The Cardinals also tied for fifth as a team with a 325.

Wright County West Boys

New London-Spicer tied for third place with a 172 at Glencoe Country Club on Thursday.

Noah Dietz led the Wildcats with a 38, which tied for fourth-best score with Litchfield's Brandon Nelson. The Dragons scored a 182 in a tightly contested half of the conference.

Paynesville's Jordan Wegner added another medal to his showcase with a first place finish at Shadowbrooke Golf Course. He carded a 40 to pace the field.

BBE tied for fourth place as a team in part due to Jayden Miller's 42, a mark which put him at a tie for third place.

Morris/CA edged Minnewaska by two strokes and Melrose was third, six strokes back.

Jacob Zosel had the best score in the afternoon session with a 35, just two strokes better than Minnewaska's Esten Stensrud and BOLD's Mason Mages who each shot a 37 at Montevideo.

Zosel's strong day allowed him to edge Stensrud for the West Central Conference's lowest average score of 37.13. Stensrud held the lead nearly all season but finishes in second with a 37.38 average.

West Central Girls

Ashlyn Guggisberg wrapped up the regular season West Central Conference season the same way she's done most of her career: with a first place finish.

She posted the low score and won or tied for first in every meet this season and she took first place in the final standings with a 37.8 scoring average, nearly three strokes better than second place Ashley Trongard of BOLD. Trongard also tied for second with Montevideo's Alex Wolner on Thursday with a 42.

Guggisberg, the University of Montana commit, leads a quartet of Lakers named all-conference. BOLD and Morris also each have four all-conference competitors. Trongard is joined by Madison VanDerHagen, Whitney Trongard and lanie Mages. Morris' all-conference golers are Shiori Legate, Peyton Hennen, Hannah Zimmel and Megan Kirkeide.

Benson's Kellie Enderson also made all-conference.
