Lakers, Mudhens to meet in District 7 championship
SPICER - Glenwood/Lowry inched closer to another state tournament trip Thursday night.
They survived a seventh-inning scare and held off New London-Spicer to win 4-3 and take the best-of-three series in Thursday's Division II District 7 North Championship.
The Lakers were first to strike with a pair of runs scored by Matthew Gruber and Colin Richards in the top of the fourth inning but NLS followed that up with two of their own in the bottom half of that inning. Josh Soine tripled with two outs to reach and scored on an error to get his team on the board. Matt Spaulding laced a double to right-centerfield to drive in Derek Dolezal to tie things up.
G/L kept up the pace in the fifth inning, though, with two more runs from Ryan Christenson and Connor Westberg as part of a three hit inning for the Lakers.
That was enough for Gruber, the Laker starter who went 6-1/3 innings with four hits allowed and a pair of unearned runs. Sean Kelling relieved Gruber in the seventh and allowed a run but recorded a strikeout and a groundout to earn the save.
Will Roguske was tagged with the loss for NLS after allowing four runs in seven innings of work.
Glenwood/Lowry will take on BOLD in the first game of the District 7 Championship at 5 p.m. Saturday in Montevideo. It is a best-of-three series with game two set for noon Sunday.

Willmar 3, Hutchinson 1
Brayden Sunder knocked in two runs with a double in the seventh inning Thursday to take a 3-0 lead and provide what proved to be the game-winning runs in a narrow victory over Hutchinson, the two seed in the Division I Sub-State 15 tournament.
Post 167 started the day with news of a forfeit by St. Joseph, which allowed Willmar to advance to take on Hutchinson in what would have been the second game of the day.
Brady Bauman delivered the first run of the day in the second inning and that was enough early on for Caleb Ditmarson who was rolling on the mound for Post 167. He finished the game with only four hits allowed over seven innings. The lone Hutchinson run was unearned in the seventh.
Willmar now advances to take on Marshall, the five seed. Marshall defeated Willmar 4-2 to start off the playoffs on Wednesday. The rematch is the losers bracket semifinal and is set to take place at 3:30 p.m. Friday in Hutchinson. The winner of that game will advance to take on the loser of Waconia and Cold Spring at 6 p.m.
