VFW Baseball: Willmar's run ends
WILLMAR - Willmar VFW saw its run at the state tournament come to a heartbreaking end on Friday afternoon, falling 4-3 to Centennial in extra innings a Swansson Orange.
Post 1639 drew even at 3-3 in the fifth inning and the score remained tied until the bottom of the 10th, when Centennial lined a walk-off single with one out.
The loss was Willmar's second of the tournament, eliminating it from further play.
The tournament continues today and Sunday at Bill Taunton Stadium.
Bryan Weidemann delivered a strong outing on the mound, allowing just two earned runs and four hits over nine innings. The right-hander settled in nicely after Centennial plated one run in each of the first three innings.
Drey Dirksen reached base three times and scored twice for Post 1639, while Andy Schultz drove in the team's other run. Caleb Owens, Wade Fischer and Gunnar Banks all had two hits.
Willmar outhit Centennial 13-5, but couldn't come through with enough hits with men on base. It loaded the bases in the ninth inning, but a hard line drive was hit right to third base to end the frame.
