Boys Soccer: Simon scores
PRINSBURG — Central Minnesota Christian School's Simon Van Dyken scored more goals in Friday's 6-1 season opening win against Minnewaska than many players score in a season.
The senior forward netted five total goals in a dominant team performance by the Bluejays. They officially outshot their opponent 15-8, and the constant CMCS pressure put the game in the home team's favor from kickoff.
Van Dyken and the Bluejays took some time to breakthrough but his first goal in the 19th minute appeared to open the floodgates. He followed the opening strike up with a pair of goals in the 28th minute to cap a hat trick in the first half hour.
Junior forward Jacob Brown, who assisted on two of Van Dyken's goals, added a goal himself just two minutes before half time.
Two more goals in the first 11 minutes of the second half put the game at 6-0 but Minnewaska grabbed one back with a top-notch 70th minute penalty kick following a handball in the box. The ball banged off the post to the right of an outstretched Mason Beekman to break the keeper's clean sheet.
