WILLMAR — The Willmar volleyball team took care of business to remain undefeated on Thursday night by defeating St. Cloud Tech in straight sets.

The Cardinals improved to 4-0 with a 25-13, 25-23, 25-22 victory behind Esther Grussing's 32 assists.

Willmar took the first set with relative ease ease with a strong showing from their service. On the night, the Cardinals had 11 aces as a team.

The Tigers fought back in each of the next two sets, but both times Willmar pulled away late for the sweep.

It was a balanced attack that got the job done for Willmar as nobody posted double-digit kills. Abby Volk and Caitlin Ogdahl led the way with nine kills each, while Carly Wedel and Grace Marti had seven each.

The Cardinals face a tough test this weekend at a tournament in Shakopee on Saturday featuring Rochester Mayo, Eagan and Forest Lake. Eagan is the top-ranked team in Class 3A.

Paynesville 3, Kimball 1

Kimball had no relief from Skylar Bayer Thursday night as the Paynesville hitter collected 17 kills in a 3-1 victory.

The Bulldogs moved to 8-1 on the season after only dropping the third set.

Paynesville took advantage of strong service all night, finishing with 19 service aces including five from Molly Stang and Jenna Lundquist each.

Four Jaguars finished with double-digit kills as BBE held off Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted in a five-set bout.

Katherine Mastey finished with a team-high 13 kills as Morgan Gronli tallied 12 and Ally Gruber joined Kendra Schmitz with 10 kills each.

Gruber had her hand in nearly every statistical category with five service aces, nine digs and five solo blocks in addition to her 10 kills.
