NEW LONDON — The Brandon Adelman-Kelly Bennetts connection was in midseason form as New London-Spicer christened their new turf field with a 40-10 victory over St. Cloud Cathedral Friday night.

Adelman tallied five touchdown passes, including three to Bennetts in the second half, to guide the Wildcat offense to yet another impressive showing.

"When you think of all that time Kelly and Brandon got as sophomores last year, you can see that experience on the field now," said NLS head coach Dan Essler. "They both have matured so much. The game slows down so much with more experience. They have a great connection and it showed today."

Adelman threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Cade Barrett in the first quarter to get the Wildcats on the board early. Bennetts had a second quarter touchdown pass negated because of a chop block penalty but NLS grabbed a second touchdown minutes later with a 25-yard strike to Jake Schmidt.

NLS led 14-0 at halftime in large part due to the defense. The Wildcat defense tallied three sacks on the day--all in the first half--to pressure Crusader quarterback Dan Hjort. Hjort was limited to 71 passing yards on 23 attempts in the game.

Hjort and the Crusaders figured out that Wildcat defense to start the second half, though, marching down the field before a one-yard quarterback touchdown run. Cathedral stuffed NLS on the ensuing drive but muffed a punt, giving the home team the ball.

"That was a huge play," Essler said. "We lost our fire at halftime. We dominated so much in the first half so I think we thought it would be easy but they pushed us around there in the second half."

NLS responded with four straight touchdowns, including three straight touchdowns to Bennetts, for a 26-0 run to put the game away. Bennetts scored on passing plays of 28 yards, 48 yards and 31 yards respectively. He finished the day with five catches for 127 yards and three touchdowns.

Sam Stageberg added a one-yard touchdown run to cap off a day of 16 carries for 92 yards.

NLS will head to Zimmerman next week to take on the Thunder.
