Cards fall short against Spuds

MOORHEAD — Willmar put up a valiant effort but ultimately fell short 36-20 to Class 5A's No. 7-ranked team Moorhead.

Spuds running back Otis Weah proved to be an unstoppable force in a matchup that ultimately decided the game. He ran for four touchdowns on 23 carries and 208 yards.

The Cardinals traded blows with the Spuds until the fourth quarter when, leading 21-20, Moorhead rattled off two unanswered scores to make it 36-20.

Willmar was missing starting quarterback Donald Jurek due to injury but Drey Dirksen stepped in to complete 15 of his 26 passes for 153 yards and rushed for 63 yards on 17 carries.

The rushing totals proved to be problematic, though, as the Spuds outgained the Cardinals 331-162.

Willmar will be back at Hodapp Field next Friday when they play hosts to St. Cloud Apollo.

Mt. Lake 30, RCW 27

Mountain Lake converted on fourth down from the Renville County West eight yard line and converted the game-winning score with 20 seconds left on the clock one play later for a thrilling 30-27 victory.

The Jaguars had one last chance at a Hail Mary pass to win the game, but it fell incomplete as time expired.

Jack Howard threw for 145 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 104 yards and other score for RCW.

Mountain Lake's lone touchdown of the first half came on a Hail Mary pass of their own as the second quarter clock expired.

The Wolverines then converted a 4th-and-6 from the Jaguars' 8 with 30 seconds to play. Jeff Wright then plunged in from one yard to put Mountain Lake ahead for good.
