Local Roundup: Hovland earns spot in state tennis tourney

SARTELL — Willmar tennis player Cayle Hovland won two of three matches in the Section 8AA individual tournament on Saturday to advance to the Class AA state tournament on Oct. 24-27.

Hovland won her semifinals match, lost in the championship match but rebounded with a win in a True Second match to earn her state tournament berth.

The Class AA tournament is at the University of Minnesota's Baseline Club. Litchfield plays The Blake School in the Class A team tournament on Oct. 24 at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

In the semifinals, Hovland defeated Rocori's Brynn Sauer 6-3, 6-1 but lost to Bemidji's Abbie Kelm 6-1, 6-4 in the title match. Kelm defeated Brainerd Payge Fitterer 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals, and since won the third-place match, a True Second match against Hovland was required to determine the second state spot.

But Hovland rebounded from the loss to Kelm to defeat Fitterer 6-3, 6-3.

St. Cloud Tech's Katelyn Tarrolly and Ashley Tarrolly won the 8AA doubles championship and Tigers' teammates Rebeka Zwiener and Anne Bowe also earned a state berth with a True Second win.
