Prep Football: NLS scores late to edge Cathedral
NEW LONDON — It was ugly, but New London-Spicer is on to the second round of the Section 6AAA playoffs.
Brandon Adelman connected with Jani TerWisscha with 6:19 remaining in the fourth quarter to take a 28-21 win over St. Cloud Cathedral Tuesday night in New London. The win sets up a rematch of last year's semifinal match against Albany. The second-seeded Huskies will host the Wildcats at 7 p.m. Saturday.
NLS started the game strong by marching down the field in the opening drive, capping the drive with a four-yard touchdown run from Blake Peterson. The following drives featured a pair of lost fumbles and St. Cloud Cathedral capitalized with a seven-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to make the game 7-6 after a blocked extra point.
Turnovers were a problem in general for the Wildcats. They put the ball on the ground five times and lost two of those in addition to two interceptions from Brandon Adelman.
Adelman showed strong flashes, however. He finished the game with nine completions on 18 attempts for two touchdowns and 109 passing yards.
Stageberg, who lost the fumbles, rallied throughout the game for 117 yards on 29 carries. It was his fellow backfield mate that stole the show with eight carries for 52 yards and four solo tackles on defense.
The Wildcat win sets up not only a rematch of last year's playoff game but also of the regular season finale which the Huskies won 38-36.
