Local Roundup: ACGC volleyball team moves in in 5A playoffs

BENSON—Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City rebounded from a tough first set loss to keep its season alive with a four-set win over Benson in the Section 5A playoffs on Thursday night.

A back-and-forth affair, the Falcons took the final two sets by a 26-24 score after dropping the first one by the same mark.

ACGC advances to face Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa tonight at 7 p.m.

Rylie Wilner had herself a night, recording 20 digs and a game-high 18 kills. Rachel Wilner was at the center of the Falcons' attack with 34 kills herself.

Addison Bernstein had 15 kills and Madison Denton added 11 for ACGC.

Lizzie Staton led Benson with 11 kills.

New London-Spicer pulled off an upset of three-seed Montevideo Tuesday behind hitters Ashton Engelke and Kendra Bagley.

Bagley led the way for the Wildcats with 11 kills, just ahead of Engelke's 10. Engelke also added a team-high three solo blocks as well.

NLS now sets up a meeting with No. 2 Paynesville at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Paynesville.

Girls Tennis

The doubles pairing of Avery Stilwell and Shanna Kinny headlined a strong Litchfield contingent on the first day of the individual state tennis tournament on Thursday.

Stillwell and Kinny won their first two matches to advance to the semifinals on Friday morning at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center.

The No. 3-seeded Class A tandem defeated Julia Hanson and Tea Armstrong of Blue Earth Area in the opening round 6-1, 6-1. In the quarterfinals, Mounds Park's Rachel Lindrud and Sofia Walker took the Dragons pairing to three sets before Stilwell and Kinny pulled away.

Willmar's Cayle Hovland advanced to the second day of the consolation bracket after going 1-1.

Hovland fell to the state's top-seeded player, Nicole Copeland of Edina, before downing Brooke Hapuku of Farmington 6-2, 6-1 in her consolation bracket opener.

Hovland will face Mahtomedi's Alexi Harrod in the consolation semifinals at 8 a.m.

Minnewaska's doubles team of Anna Vold and Greta Reichmann advanced to the Class A consolation semifinals, as well.

Two other area pairing participated in the Class A doubles tournament, with teammates Hannah Orlowski and Alissa Thorfinnson, as well as Litchfield's Laney Huhner and Vaida Behnke, dropping both of their matches.

In Class A singles, Danielle Thorfinnson advanced to the quarterfinals with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 first-round victory over Litchfield's Elise Bierbaum. Thorfinnson went on to drop her quarterfinal match against second-seeded Arlina Shen of The Blake School, while Bierbaum advanced to the consolation semifinals with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Sophie Lynch of Holy Family Catholic.
