Boys basketball: Litchfield cruises into 6AA-South final

COLLEGEVILLE — Litchfield cranked up its already impressive defense and made easy work of Eden Valley-Watkins in the Section 6AA South Sub-Section semifinals on Saturday at St. John’s University.

Top-seeded Litchfield, 22-5, plays either New London-Spicer or Morris/Chokio-Alberta for the sub-section title at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday at SJU. NLS and MCA play tonight at SJU in a semifinals game that was postponed on Saturday.

The No. 4 Eagles (12-14) managed just 10 first-half points and didn’t fare much better in the second half.

I thought that defensively we did an extremely good job,” said Litchfield head coach John Carlson, whose team held EVW to 18 percent shooting from the field and outrebounded the Eagles 45-29.

“We just made it really hard for them to get in the lane,” he said.

Offensively, the Dragons shot 40 percent from the field but hit just 3 of 18 from the 3-point line (17 percent).

“I thought we were getting good shots which just didn’t go in,” Carlson said. “We didn’t worry about that. If the defense would have been bad, then we would have been worried.”

Zach Whitchurch and Joel Madsen both scored 13 points for the Dragons, and Whitchurch also had 10 rebounds.

Riley Pater had 8 points and a team-high 12 rebounds, and Zach Kinny finished with 6 points, 4 assists and 3 steals.
