Prep baseball: Chargers shut out Hancock 12-0

EVANSVILLE — Thanks to some dedicated baseballs fans from the Brandon/Evansville program, Hancock and the Chargers finally opened their seasons Tuesday with B/E collecting a 12-0 Pheasant County Conference shutout in five innings.

Hancock coach Chad Christianson said he was told that someone was at the field at 6 a.m. Tuesday shoveling off the snow and that later in the day someone was using a wet/dry vacuum to suck up the water in the infield.

The Chargers’ slim 2-0 lead after 3½ innings was extended comfortably to 12-0 after they produced 10 runs in the fourth. The home team sent up 14 batters to the plate that resulted in eight hits in the frame.

Philip Schaefer singled in the third and pinch-hitter Will Osterman singled in the fifth to account for the Owls’ two hits. Four players had two hits for B/E, with Mitch Anderson igniting the attack with two doubles that knocked in three runs.

Tom Bosek worked all five innings on the hill, striking out nine along the way, to earn the win. Hancock starter Taylor Holleman worked into the fourth and was tagged with the loss.
