Prep softball roundup: KMS sweeps twin bill

Tribune photo by Tom Larson KMS’s Kalli Forsell takes a rip at a pitch in the second game of the Saints’ doubleheader sweep of Lakeview on Thursday in Murdock. Forsell hit two of KMS’ three home runs in the Saints’ 18-1 and 19-1 victories.

MURDOCK — KMS softball coach Eileen Suter said she saw a few things her team needs to work on: base running and some fielding fundamentals.

The bats and arms, however, appear to be just fine.

Last year’s Class A consolation champ picked up nicely from where it left off last year, blitzing Lakeview 18-1 and 19-1 Thursday in the Saints’ season-opening doubleheader.

KMS had 27 hits, including three home runs, in the two five-inning games.

Kalli Forsell homered in both games and Courtney Olson hit a round-tripper in game two.

Erin Haglund had six hits, including three doubles, and she drove in nine runs. She also no-hit Lakeview in the second game.

Olson drove in seven runs and Forsell had five RBIs.

“We’ve got some power,” Suter said.

Senior pitcher Sam Dunn worked the first game, allowing a run on four hits. She didn’t surrender a walk and struck out five. Dunn also had three hits and four RBIs on the day.

Haglund was dominant pitching the second game, allowing just an unearned run in the first inning. She worked all five innings, striking out 10.

Because of the weather-related delayed start of the season, Camden Conference teams will play all five-inning games this season. The Saints play next against Russell-Tyler-Ruthton at home on Tuesday.

They then play Dawson-Boyd, again at home, on Thursday.
