Prep baseball roundup: Hutch quiets Willmar

HUTCHINSON — A six-game stretch in five days began for the Willmar Cardinals on Monday with a good day in the field but small production at the plate.

The Cardinals (1-9) fell to the Hutchinson Tigers, a section adversary, 5-1. Josh Warne took the loss.

Freshman Zack Radermacher threw two innings allowing a hit, no runs, a walk and two strike outs.

Willmar managed just three hits off Conner Kern, who went all seven. Brandon Christianson had a pair of singles and Warne also singled, scoring later in the second inning on a ground out by Austin Smith.

The Tigers got back-to-back wind-aided homers in a three-run third inning.

“It was a good baseball game and our defense made the plays,” commented Cardinal coach Mark Stier. “We need more hits.”

Willmar hosts Sauk Rapids at 5 p.m. today, plays two at Rocori in Cold Spring on Thursday and another twin bill on Friday at Baker Field versus Brainerd.

Marshall 2, Morris/CA 1

MARSHALL — A couple of miscues in the first inning ended up haunting Morris/Chokio-Alberta Monday as the Tigers were edged 2-1 by Section 3AA foe Marshall.

A wild pitch on a third strike and an errant throw on a stolen base attempt allowed Marshall to score twice in the first inning.

Morris/Chokio-Alberta starter Karle Meyer and Chandler Erickson gave up just one hit each, but Meyer left the game in the second inning after getting hit in head while on the mound.

A Marshall come-backer glanced off Meyer’s glove and struck the junior left-hander in the head. Meyer stayed in the dugout for the remainder of the game after a trainer yanked him for having a headache and watery eyes.

Aaron Mathiowetz kept MCA scoreless until Logan Manska walked and scored on Mac Beyer’s two-out triple in the sixth. MCA also got doubles from Erickson and Tanner Picht, and a single from Tom Holland as it suffered its second straight loss after opening the season with nine straight wins.

MCA had chances against Mathiowetz, stranding a runner on second in three innings, including in the seventh with only one out. Mathiowetz finished the game to earn a complete-game win that featured three strikeouts to just one walk.
