Prep softball: Bulldogs, Lakers move on in Section 6AA

WAITE PARK — Paynesville was handed its first loss of the season before edging an old conference rival to stay alive in the Section 6AA-East playoffs Thursday.

The top-seeded Bulldogs, now 17-1, were upset by the fifth-seeded Milaca Wolves 8-5 in second round to get knocked into the loser’s bracket. Paynesville then outlasted Albany 2-1 to knock the Huskies out of the postseason.

Paynesville will now play at 5 p.m. today back at River’s Edge Park against No. 2 Holdingford in another elimination game.

In the West half of the section Thursday, No. 2 Minnewaska was beaten 7-3 by No. 3 Staples-Motley before drubbing Sauk Centre 13-3 in five innings in the loser’s bracket.

The Lakers will meet top-seeded Pequot Lakes on Saturday at 5 p.m. in Wadena in an elimination game.

Staples-Motley 7,

Minnewaska 3

(At Glenwood) — The Lakers were held scoreless for the first five innings before Kacia Kollman belted a two-run double in the sixth to cut Staples-Motley’s lead in half. The Cardinals then went up five in the seventh after adding three insurance runs.

Minnewaska got a run back in the bottom half of the seventh on Madison Phillips’ RBI single. Phillips and Shanae Suchy had two hits each as Staples-Motley outhit the Lakers 10-6.

(At Waite Park) — A six-run second inning for Milaca put the top-seeded Bulldogs in a hole that they almost climbed out of. Paynesville loaded the bases a couple of times, but it could only produce one run or no runs at all to stay behind.

Kayla Schaefer singled three times and Allie Stanger doubled and singled to highlight Paynesville’s nine-hit attack.

(At Waite Park) — Paynesville stayed alive by outdueling its old West Central Conference rival as both teams connected for just five hits each.

Brooke Wuertz scored both Bulldog runs, in the fourth on Kayla Reiman’s hard shot that ricocheted off the glove of Albany’s shortstop and in the sixth on another Albany error.

(At Glenwood) — Julie Helander launched a two-run homer over the fence in the second inning and delivered a game-ending RBI double in the fifth to help keep Minnewaska in the playoffs.

After getting held to six hits in their first game of the day, the Lakers exploded for 14 against their West Central North Conference rivals. Helander finished with three hits, as did Lexi Amundson, as nine different Lakers collected a hit.

A five-run first fueled the rout as Allyssa Engfer and Helander both doubled in a run and Taylor Noetzelman and Sydney Joos added RBI singles in the frame. Phillips struck out five, didn’t walk a batter and surrendered just one earned run in a complete-game performance.
