Prep Baseball: Paynesville edges Melrose in extra innings, gets Cathedral

Tribune Staff Report

ST. CLOUD — Two hits and a Melrose overthrow at third base allowed Paynesville to score the winning run in the eighth inning of a Section 6AA-West semifinals game at Dick Putz Field on Wednesday.

Nathan Meyer drove in a pair of runs and Jordan Roos worked all eight innings in the Bulldogs’ 4-3 victory over the Dutchmen.

In the first inning, Melrose’s Ty Reller walked two batters, then surrendered a two-run double to Meyer and an RBI single to Matthew Quade to put Paynesville up 3-0.

Melrose chipped away with runs in the first, fourth and seventh innings to tie the game.

Roos scattered seven hits and allowed just an unearned run. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out six.

Paynesville, now 10-5, plays St. Cloud Cathedral, the state’s No. 2-ranked team, at 7 p.m. today at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud.

Litchfield 5,

Maple Lake 4

Dylan Koll’s two-out, two-strike single to right field in the bottom of the 10th inning brought home the winning run in Litchfield’s 5-4 victory over Maple Lake in the Section 5AA-West championship game on Wednesday in Delano.

Litchfield had to rally for two runs in the ninth inning to stay alive, and in the 10th, Nate King singled and gave way to pinch runner Riley Johnson. After an Austin Larson walk, Johnson reached third and scored on Koll’s single.

In the ninth inning, Maple Lake scored twice to take a 4-2 lead and had the Dragons down to their last out when Zach Kinny singled in two runs to send the game to the 10th inning.

Kinny worked eight innings and Larson worked the rest of the way, getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth, to get the win.

Litchfield, 12-7, now plays East sub-section champ Delano at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Delano. The teams were scheduled to play during the regular season but poor weather forced a cancellation.
