Prep Baseball: Paynesville no-hit in 6AA playoffs

ST. CLOUD — Jeff Fasching no-hit Paynesville Friday to lift Class AA top-ranked St. Cloud Cathedral into the Section 6AA winner’s bracket final with a 2-0 win.

Fasching surrendered just three base runners and struck out 10 to help the Crusaders improve to 21-2 on the season.

That Fasching kid is tough,” said Paynesville coach Brad Skoglund. “He’s sneaky quick and locates his pitches. He’s the best pitcher we’ve faced all season.”

Fasching did walk two Bulldogs in the seventh, but with one out SCC turned in a game-ending double play when its second baseman fielded a shallow fly in the outfield and threw to the shortstop covering second to double up the Paynesville runner.

Paynesville (10-6) starter Blake Karsch nearly matched Fasching inning-by-inning, but Bo Schmitz got a hold of a Karsch pitch in the fourth to just clear the fence in left field for a two-run homer. Karsch gave up eight hits and only issued one walk in a complete-game performance.

The loss drops Paynesville into the loser’s bracket, where it will play West Central Conference rival Minnewaska Monday at 5 p.m. on Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud. The Lakers beat Paynesville 10-6 on April 30 in Glenwood.
