Prep baseball: Springfield bounces LQPV

MARSHALL — Lac qui Parle Valley’s quest to return to the Class A state tournament came to an end in a 7-0 loss to Springfield in the Section 3A playoffs on Tuesday night.

Zach Mickelson’s two-run home run in the Tigers’ three-run third inning was a major blow to the Eagles’ hopes of advancing through the losers bracket to get another crack at Windom, which downed LQPV 1-0 on Saturday.

“That Saturday loss was a killer,” said LQPV head coach Bart Hill. “We had so many chances in that game, so shame on us. We would have been in the catbird seat, waiting while two teams have to play and use a good pitcher. But that’s the way it goes.”

LQPV finished 18-3 after advancing to the Class A title game last season.

The Eagles had good chances against Springfield’s ace Shawn Anderson, who came into the game with a 0.40 earned-run average and averaging more than a strike out per inning.

The Eagles managed seven hits and could have had more were it not for the stellar play of the Tigers’ infield.

“We hit the ball well,” Hill said, “but there were just right at (the Tigers). We easily could have had 10 or 11 hits if they’d gone to the right places. Their infielders were playing back and cut off a lot of balls that could have been base hits.”

Austin Haas, Preston Kraft and Brandon Hill all had two hits for the Eagles, and Jalen Baldwin was 1-for-3. Colby Siegert worked all seven innings and took the loss.

Springfield will now have to defeat Windom twice to take the section championship. The teams play at 6 p.m. Thursday in Granite Falls.
