Prep Softball: EV-Watkins claims 3rd place in Class A after thrashing Saints 7-2

NORTH MANKATO — The KMS softball team lost as many games in two days as it did in three seasons.

The Saints, which fell in the Class A semifinals Thursday night, were undone for a second time in just more than 12 hours, losing 7-2 to Eden Valley-Watkins in the third-place game Friday at Caswell Park.

The Eagles broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the third inning and iced the game with three more in the fourth.

Sam Dunn had two hits, including a home run, in her final prep game. Alison Krieger, Erin Haglund and Haylie Helms all had two hits, and Sam Gjerde drove in a run.

Haglund took the loss, allowing seven earned runs.

“We were not expecting them to hit that well,” said KMS coach Eileen Suter. “They kept fouling Erin off and I think she got tired.”

“We didn’t hit like we normally do, but it’s always nice to get down here.

EVW’s Baylee Lahr scattered nine hits — KMS stranded eight runners — and just one earned run.

The Eagles’ Holly Schumacher was 4-for-4 with a homer and a double, and she drove in two runs and scored three times.

Krieger, who had six hits in the Saints’ three tournament games, was named to the Class A All-Tournament Team. Helms was added to the roster of the All-Star Series, which will be played Sunday at Caswell Park. She joins teammates Courtney Olson, Dunn and Haglund on series teams.

The Saints finished the season 23-2.
